Kiem Award
The KNVM/NVMM science committee makes these awards available for the best first publications written by young microbiologists, whom are society members that are at the start of their microbiology career. Submissions are evaluated based on the quality of the candidate's first publication in an internationally renowned academic journal. The candidate should be the first author of that article. It should be indicated to which KNVM section the article belongs.
The award is named Kiem, which is Dutch for 'germ' (germination).

Westerdijk Award
The NVvM/NVMM science committee makes this award available for the best PhD-thesis in the field of (medical) microbiology or infectious diseases. Candidates should submit their PhD-thesis which was defended less than a year ago.
The award is named after Johanna Westerdijk. She was appointed professor at the University of Utrecht in 1917 and was the first female professor in the Netherlands. She was director of the phytopathology laboratory Willie Commelin Scholten and showed that the elm disease (generally known as dutch elm disease) was caused by the fungus Ceratocystis ulmi.

Van Leeuwenhoek Award
The NVvM/NVMM science committee makes this award available to the Post-Doc that has delivered the most impressive contribution to microbiology achieved within three years after obtaining a PhD.
The Van Leeuwenhoek Award is in commemoration of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Van Leeuwenhoek constructed a light microscope, which could magnify a few hundred times. This achievement made him a pioneer in the field of microbiology.

Van Leeuwenhoek Awardees 2009-2011
Kluyver Award
The KNVM Executive Committee makes this award available to a microbiologist with the most impressive contribution to microbiology achieved within eight years after obtaining a PhD.
The awardee will give a presentation at the KNVM/NVMM spring meeting and write a paper on the awarded work.
The Kluyver Award is in commemoration of Albert-Jan Kluyver. He was professor in General and Applied Microbiology at the Delft University of Technology from 1921 to 1956. He stated that taxonomy of microorganisms should be based on morphology and metabolism. Moreover, he launched the concept of unity in biochemistry.

Kluyver Awardees 1963-2011
Kluyver Lecture
The KNVM invites once every three to five years an internationally renowned microbiologist to present the Kluyver lecture.
