Washington, DC—March 22, 2013— The 2013 USFCC/J. Roger Porter Award has been presented to Lenie Dijkshoorn, Ph.D., Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands. The award, given in memory of J. Rodger Porter, honors extraordinary efforts by a scientist who has demonstrated the importance of microbial biodiversity through sustained curatorial or stewardship activities for a major resource used by the scientific community. Joan Bennett says “Dijkshoorn’s willingness to follow through on projects large and small, her high professional standards and her rigor as a taxonomist, make her an ideal candidate for the USFCC/J. Roger Porter Award.”

The ‘Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure’ (MIRRI) (http://www.mirri.org/) is an initiative endorsed by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and is included in their roadmap 2010, complementing other already existing Research Infrastructures.

From March 10 until March 13, 2013 the VAAM and the KNVM organized the yearly VAAM Jahres tagung together in Bremen.

Vrouwelijke wetenschappers kunnen vanaf 8 maart 2013 een Nederlandse ‘For Women in Science’-beurs aanvragen om hun carrière een extra impuls te geven. De Nationale UNESCO Commissie en L’Oréal Nederland introduceren het beurzenprogramma in samenwerking met het Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) en het Landelijk Netwerk Vrouwelijke Hoogleraren (LNVH).

Er zijn jaarlijks twee Nederlandse beurzen van maximaal 25.000 euro beschikbaar voor vrouwelijke wetenschappers, die actief zijn in de life sciences in brede zin. Beurzen kunnen worden toegewezen in de periode tot tien jaar na de promotie (vergelijkbaar met niveau Vidi). Ze zijn bestemd voor een onderzoeksverblijf op de NIAS-campus in Wassenaar waar de onderzoekers als onderdeel van een internationale academische gemeenschap hun wetenschappelijke carrière verder kunnen ontwikkelen.
